Darrell will join a web forum under a new account and post innocuous messages like "me too" or "LOL" until his post count ratchets up to a "respectable" number. He then uses this de facto reputation to help persuade others that he can be trusted, that he is a man of his word, and that he has been around a long time. In fact, in 2006, Darrell created 5 accounts on pirate4x4.com alone, which today would show a reputation of 4 years and growing. He used an account on steelsoldiers.com that generated upwards of 600 posts, met several users of that site under unremarkable circumstances, and even helped out a roadside-stranded member to show what a good guy he is.Use-case #1: Darrell uses this identity building (under whatever name he's chosen) to sell an inordinate number of goods, usually hardware associated with offroad trucks of the 4x4, 4WD, 4-WD, AWD, 6x6 or 5-Ton variety (yes, I did that for keywords; so what). What Darrell is fond of doing is taking a set of photographs of a friend's truck, or perhaps pictures from eBay or another 4x4 truck website then showing those pictures as being the wares he has for sale. Usually, these pieces come in at an extremely low-ball price. For example, a front-steer 5-ton Rockwell axle, which should sell for $1,500, Darrell might have "one last one" for $750. He'd then take several orders for this axle that doesn't even exist, then never ship it. He'd say his customer pulled out of a deal, or that his father's trailer got repossessed with said axle on it, or that he had to leave town on a family emergency, or that the IRS has garnished his wages or any of a billion possible excuses not to be able to deliver the axle.
Use-case #2: Darrell will say he operates as a part-owner or employee of a company called either "No Limit Kustoms" or, more often, "Offroad Fabworks," based in or near Celina, Ohio. What Darrell wil do is get people to deliver their vehicle or vehicle parts to his address so he can perform fabrication magic to match the photographs on his (now defunct) website. You guessed it: those photos aren't his work, and no results await the victim. Another ploy similar to this is that he will offer work, parts or machinist procedures that match a set of specifications he may post in an online forum. As you guessed: Darrell has done none of this work, he has re-used someone else's photography to sell a product that does not exist, and victims will send their money hoping to get a high-quality version of an important piece at a lower cost.
In any event, once the victim has sent their money and has grown tired of waiting for results, they will inquire as to the whereabouts of their hard-earned money. When one asks for a refund, Darrell wil calmly show you that you can't squeeze blood from a turnip, and that he wants to make things right, but he just doesn't have the money because his wife left him, or the badgers ate his wallet, or he was in Ohio when he got carried away by Hurricane Katrina in 2008.
All in one, Darrell is a 21st-Century Snake Oil salesman, a 3-Card Monty Artist, a Confidence Man, a carnival weight-guesser and the ever-elusive mistaken mailbox you accidentally dropped your payment into, never to be seen again.
Darrell is no different than the phishers and scammers that flood your mailbox with offers of immediate wealth or promises of bargains galore. The fact is, Darrell has tuned this art to a specific set of targets that are notably fans and buyers of military surplus vehicles, off-road trucks, 4x4 machines, diesel engine and chassis hardware. By even the most conservative accounts, Darrell owes approximately $22,250 to various individuals who trusted him to perform work or deliver parts that he simply could not honor.
The Fallout:
Many websites are implementing an authentication feature that alerts site admins every time someone from (a Certain Given Geographic Area) tries to join. They may ask for identification to allow joining. They may ask for a $1 donation via credit card to validate their address. Sites often disallow "screen names" or "callsigns" unless the new member passes a validation test that insures they are not on the current watchlist for fraudulent surnames. (I've renamed it here to PREVENT cross-linking just for you, Darrell). Some admins are taking it a step further and asking all members to come forward with information about Darrell, no matter how innocuous it may seem. Some websites disallow Darrell Braun's name, no matter how it's spelled (or misspelled) unless they provide a telephone number for confirmation. Some sites simply don't allow automatic creation of user accounts. Darrell's father is Keith, his mother is Patty (Patricia). Parents are age 53, Darrell is 29. Darrell has 3 younger sisters: Heather Marie, Stephanie Lynn and Tanya Nicole. Darrell has lived in Celina, OH, Coldwater OH, Decatur, AL, Defiance, OH, Sylacauga, AL, Ft. Recovery, OH and Lima, OH, and that's just a partial list.
Darrell knocked up a young girl named Megan Tousley (daughter of single-mom Stacey) who lived in Decatur, Al then St. Mary's, OH. She now lives on Ashland Ave in Wapak, just a couple blocks from the Auglaize County Jail. That's convenient!

To give you an idea of what a piece of work Darrell is, he created an eBay account named "katelynnb07" to defraud people. Katelynn Braun, born 2007, is his DAUGHTER! Darrell knocked up Megan twice, then had a kid with another gal, and now seems to fancy Megan again.
What To Do if You Think You're About To Be Brauned:
First thing you need to do is: TRUST YOUR VENDOR. That sounds simple, but it's deeper than words. Know who they are. Have a way to reach them OFF the website, list, eBay or Paypal. Know exactly where this person is, how to identify them, and how to serve them with papers if the deal goes south. Verify the information with a phone call before you make a payment. Confirm in writing the terms of the deal, what you will receive in exchange for what dollar amount, and how/when that money will be returned after X number of days passes if no goods are recieved. Make sure everything is in writing, and that any terms of your contract must be made in writing; that no phone calls or IMs or tweets or Facebook postings supercede the terms of the agreement unless those terms are in writing. Don't let your vendor "sweet talk" you into getting more time, not even one day! If a vendor days you'll have a product in 3 months, then on the 91st day, you should be all over them like white on rice demanding a refund and you should be able to get it!Don't evenTHINK about using Paypal! EVER! Paypal does not provide you the protection they portend. They cannot get you a refund if your vendor has already spent it and left their "confirmed" bank account at a $0 or negative balance. Paypal is 21st-Centry check-kiting made flashy and trendy by "billions and billions served." Where have we heard that before? Paypal is absolutely the WORST way to send your money to someone you do not know.
If you can get away with it at all, pay in cash, in person, and let others know about the great deal you got, especially if the quality exceeds the advertisement, or the terms were better than required, or the beer was colder than you expected. REWARD GOOD BEHAVIOUR! Let the entire community know how great this person is, and let their record speak for itself.
But under NO CIRCUMSTANCES should you meet in a dark alley, in the middle of the night, behind a chain link fence that you have to cut through because he forgot the key, or in the middle of a train yard. Sounds simple, but it's not. You'd be saddened and surprised by the number of failed dealings that go on because people like Darrell pull out all the stops and say, "I don't ususally do this, but if you don't mind meeting me at work..." Next thing you know, you're on your way to jail for tresspassing and Darrell has the Rockwells in the bed of your pickup.
It's SIMPLE! If it sounds too good to be true, IT IS! Be an ADULT! Be cautious! Caveat Emptor! Be SAFE! And above all, ABOVE ALL, realize that Darrell Braun is not the first scheister to infect this planet, nor will he be the last. Don't let your good name be tarnished when associating with scum like this. Don't let your hobby be ruined by people like this. Don't let people like this ruin your quality of life!
